CBT on TikTok Shop means Cross-Border Trade: selling your products into another country and shipping across a border. It adds customs, returns and product restrictions to your normal TikTok Shop work. I run TikTok Shops daily, and my honest take is that cross-border trade is a real expansion path, but most sellers underestimate the complexity.

What is TikTok Shop cross border trade (CBT)?

CBT stands for Cross-Border Trade. On TikTok Shop, that usually means a seller in one country lists products that buyers in another country can purchase, and the order crosses an international border during fulfillment. It is not a single feature in Seller Center. It is a general term for the extra work and rules that appear when a sale leaves the seller's home country.

One thing confuses new sellers: the same three letters, CBT, are also used in some TikTok Shop pages for Collection by TikTok, a pickup service for domestic US orders where TikTok collects parcels from the seller. So if you see CBT on a page, check whether the page is talking about cross-border selling or about a pickup service. This guide is about the cross-border meaning.

How does cross-border selling work on TikTok Shop?

When you sell cross-border, the main flow is the same as domestic selling: a buyer sees your video or listing, places an order, and you must deliver the product. The difference is everything around the border.

Your product must be allowed in the buyer's country. You must produce a shipping label that carries the package through customs, and the buyer may have to pay import duties before delivery. You also need to handle customer service across time zones and possibly in another language.

The most common cross-border setups I see are:

  • A US seller shipping from the US to buyers in other countries that TikTok Shop supports.
  • An international seller shipping into the US, often from a local warehouse or a fulfillment partner.
  • A seller using a third-party logistics provider that is already set up for cross-border shipments.

Which one fits you depends on where you are registered as a seller and where your stock sits. For the current list of seller regions and supported destinations, check TikTok Shop Seller University. This changes, so I do not list it here.

What should sellers check before expanding internationally?

Before you turn on cross-border selling, check five areas. I put them in the order I would review a shop.

What mattersWhat to checkWhy it matters
Seller eligibilityYour shop region and whether TikTok Shop allows you to sell into the target countryWithout eligibility, orders from that country cannot be placed
Product restrictionsWhether your product type is allowed in the target countryCustoms or local law can block or destroy items
Shipping and customsWhich carriers you can use and who pays import dutiesDelays and unpaid duties cause refunds and negative reviews
ReturnsWhether you must accept returns from the other country and who pays return shippingCross-border returns are expensive and often not worth recovering
Customer serviceLanguage, time zone, and response expectations for the new countrySlow or wrong-language replies hurt your ratings

Do not guess any of these. TikTok Shop Seller University is the official source for current rules on seller regions, product restrictions, shipping options and returns. My honest take is to read the exact policy before you list, because cross-border mistakes are harder to undo after a buyer has paid.

How do returns and refunds work for cross-border orders?

Returns are the hardest part of cross-border trade. A buyer in another country cannot simply hand the product back to a local courier you recognize. The package has to travel back across the border, and someone has to pay for that.

On TikTok Shop, the general rule is that the seller follows the return policy that applies to the order. That policy can differ by region and by whether the product is categorized as returnable. In many cross-border cases, the seller covers return shipping because the alternative, refusing the return, leads to a refund anyway and a damaged shop score.

Because the cost of return shipping can be higher than the product's value, many cross-border sellers choose to refund the buyer and let them keep the item. That is a business decision, not a platform rule. I would work out your per-order margin first, using my free TikTok Shop profit calculator, so you know whether you can afford to refund without a return.

For the current return windows and who pays what, check TikTok Shop Seller University. The rules change, and they differ by region, so I do not state a fixed window here.

Is TikTok Shop CBT the same as Collection by TikTok?

No, but the acronym is shared. Collection by TikTok is a pickup service for domestic US sellers. You pack the order, and a TikTok-arranged courier collects it from your warehouse. It does not cross an international border by itself, although the parcel could be part of a cross-border flow later if the buyer is abroad.

Cross-border trade is the broader concept of selling and shipping across a border. When you see CBT on a Seller Center page, read the page title and the first sentence to see which one it means. If you are setting up shipping for US orders, see my guide on Fulfilled by TikTok vs shipping orders yourself to compare pickup and label options.

What are the biggest risks in cross-border trade?

I would name four risks, in order of how often I see them hurt sellers.

  1. Customs delays: the package sits at the border, the buyer opens a late-order complaint, and you get a cancellation or a refund request.
  2. High return costs: the product comes back, but the shipping costs more than the product is worth.
  3. Product restriction violations: an item that is allowed in your country is not allowed in the buyer's country, and the listing gets flagged.
  4. Currency and fee surprises: exchange rates, payment processing and platform fees change, so a price that was profitable yesterday may not be today.

You cannot remove these risks completely. You can reduce them by starting with one target country, choosing products that are small and light, and writing very clear listing information about shipping times and who pays import fees.

What else should I read before starting cross-border trade?

If you are still deciding between using a 3PL warehouse or packing orders yourself, read my comparison 3PL warehouse vs packing orders in-house for TikTok Shop. For the fees that change with every sale, use TikTok Shop fees explained so you understand what is deducted from a cross-border order.

Have a question about cross-border trade?

Ask me in the chat on this site. It is free, and I answer real questions directly. Tell me your situation, your shop, and what you tried. If you are already selling in one country and wondering whether to expand, tell me your product type and current order volume. I will help you work out what to check first.

Can I sell internationally from a US TikTok Shop?
It depends on your seller region, the target country and your product type. TikTok Shop changes supported destinations and eligibility, so check the current list on TikTok Shop Seller University before listing. Do not assume every country is open to your shop.
How do returns work for cross-border TikTok Shop orders?
Returns for cross-border orders follow the TikTok Shop return policy that applies to the order, which can differ by region and product type. The package must travel back across the border, and someone pays return shipping. Many sellers choose to refund and let the buyer keep the item when return shipping costs more than the product.
What should I check before expanding internationally?
Check seller eligibility, product restrictions in the target country, shipping and customs duties, return requirements, and customer service needs like language and time zones. Read TikTok Shop Seller University for current rules instead of guessing.
What are the biggest risks in cross-border trade?
Customs delays, high return costs, product restriction violations, and currency or fee surprises are the main risks. You can reduce them by starting with one country, choosing small and light products, and writing clear shipping and import fee information in your listings.

What is orliejohn.com?
orliejohn.com is a free TikTok Shop learning hub for sellers. It has animated Seller Center tutorials, daily TikTok Shop news in plain English, how-to guides, honest X vs Y comparisons, e-commerce basics, strategy, and free calculators and checklists. I am Orlie John Deferia and I write it.
Is it free?
Yes. Every tutorial, guide, news post and tool is free, with no signup. The AI generators have a small free allowance per visitor because each one costs real money to run.
Are there ads or sponsored posts?
No. There are no ads, no sponsored posts and no affiliate links. Nobody pays to be mentioned or ranked here, so a comparison only says what I think is true. The one thing I promote is Creatorly, a Chrome extension I built myself. It is always labeled as mine and never appears inside a guide or comparison.
How do you make sure the information is true?
Fees, rates and rules change often, so I do not guess them: I link TikTok Shop's own Seller University page instead. News posts are checked against the TikTok source they link, and every number in them has to appear in that source. Any other number is counted from real order files or marked as an example. Every page shows its date, and when something is wrong I fix it and update the date.
Who writes it?
I do: Orlie John Deferia, a TikTok Shop operator and app developer in Cebu, Philippines. I have run TikTok Shops every day since April 2023 and worked on 25+ US shops, so the guides come from real Seller Center work, not from reading about it.
Is this site from TikTok?
No. It is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or a partner of TikTok. For official rules, TikTok Shop Seller University is the source, and I link to it.
How often is it updated?
News is checked every day against TikTok Shop Seller University. A new guide goes up most days. Tutorials are updated when TikTok moves a menu in Seller Center.
Can I ask my own question?
Yes. Use the chat on any page. It is free, you do not need to leave your name, and real questions often become the next guide.
