स्टेप 1 / 4Dropshipping means you list a product and buy it from the supplier only after a customer orders it. Holding your own stock means you buy inventory upfront and ship it yourself. On TikTok Shop, dropshipping has extra rules and risks, so I usually recommend holding stock past the testing stage.
What is dropshipping on TikTok Shop?
Dropshipping on TikTok Shop is when you list a product in your shop, a customer buys it, and then you place that same order with a third-party supplier who ships it directly to the customer. You never touch the product. On TikTok Shop this model is allowed only under specific rules, and those rules are stricter than on a standalone website. For example, TikTok Shop requires the shipment to come from a warehouse that is listed in your Seller Center account, and the tracking must update within the time limit. If your supplier ships slowly or from an unlisted address, your shop can receive a violation. I have written the full rules and risks in my post Can you dropship on TikTok Shop? Rules and risks. The short version is that dropshipping works only if you treat your supplier as part of your fulfilment chain and follow TikTok Shop's current policy exactly.
What does holding your own stock mean?
Holding your own stock means you buy a batch of units from a manufacturer or wholesaler before you sell them. The stock sits in your home, a rented space, or a third-party warehouse (often called a 3PL, which stands for third-party logistics). When an order comes in, you or your 3PL picks the product, packs it, and ships it with tracking. On TikTok Shop you can ship yourself using TikTok Shipping or your own carrier. You can also use Fulfilled by TikTok, where you send stock to TikTok's warehouse and they handle storage, packing and delivery for eligible products. I compare those options in Fulfilled by TikTok vs shipping orders yourself. Holding stock gives you two things dropshipping does not. You can ship fast because the product is already near the customer, and you can inspect the product yourself before it reaches a buyer.
Day-to-day work: dropshipping vs holding stock
A dropshipping day is mostly coordination. You check new orders, forward them to your supplier, and then watch tracking to make sure the supplier ships on time. If a customer asks where their order is, you ask the supplier and relay the answer. If the supplier ships the wrong item, you handle the refund or replacement request, but the supplier often ships it again. Your main jobs are listing accuracy, customer service, and supplier quality control.
Holding your own stock shifts the work to operations. You pack orders, print labels, and hand parcels to the carrier (or manage a 3PL that does this). You count stock, reorder before you run out, and handle returns physically. You also do quality checks when new stock arrives. The work is more physical and more predictable. You are not waiting on a supplier's reply before you can answer a customer.
Here is a simple comparison of the two models. This is my honest take on the trade-offs.
| What matters | Dropshipping | Holding stock |
|---|---|---|
| Start-up cash | Low, you buy only after a sale | Higher, you pay for stock before selling |
| Control over shipping | Low, supplier sets speed and carrier | High, you or your 3PL ships on your terms |
| Risk of stock-outs | High, supplier can run out and you find out after a sale | Manageable, you count your own stock and reorder |
| Supplier mistakes | More visible, they ship wrong items to your customer | Less direct, you catch issues before shipping |
| Profit per order | Often lower, supplier takes a cut and shipping is less efficient | Often higher, bulk buying lowers unit cost and shipping can be optimized |
| Account risk on TikTok Shop | Higher if tracking or address rules break | Lower, you control the shipping details |
Control, cash and reliability: the trade-offs
The biggest difference is control. With dropshipping, your supplier controls the product, the packaging, the shipping speed and the return address. If they make a mistake, the customer blames your shop. With holding stock, you control every step. You can choose the box, add a thank-you note, and ship within 24 hours if you want. That control shows up in your Shop Performance Score because shipping speed and order accuracy affect how buyers rate you.
Cash works the opposite way. Dropshipping requires very little money to start because you do not buy inventory. You list a product, get an order, collect the customer's payment, and then pay the supplier. You are using the customer's money to buy the product. The trade-off is that you pay a higher per-unit price to the supplier, so your profit per order is usually smaller. Holding stock requires cash upfront. You must buy a batch before you know it will sell. If the product fails, you sit on unsold stock. If it sells, your unit cost is lower and your profit per order is often better. A good tool to work out that difference is my free TikTok Shop profit calculator. It shows your profit per order after all costs, so you can see whether a dropshipped product actually makes money.
Reliability is the third trade-off. A dropshipped order depends on a supplier you do not control. If their warehouse is slow, your late dispatch rate suffers. If they run out of stock, you must cancel the order, which hurts your cancellation rate. Holding stock gives you a buffer. You can see how many units you have, and you can reorder before you run out. My free reorder point calculator tells you when to reorder based on daily sales and supplier lead time (the time it takes from placing an order to receiving stock). That kind of control is harder with dropshipping because you do not see the supplier's real stock level.
Which fulfilment model costs less?
There is no single answer because the costs sit in different places. Dropshipping costs less to start, but often costs more per order because the supplier charges a higher unit price and shipping may not be combined across orders. Holding stock costs more to start because you pay for inventory, storage and possibly a 3PL. But once you are selling steadily, the per-unit cost usually drops. You buy in bulk, you can use cheaper shipping, and you avoid the supplier's dropship fee. My honest take is that dropshipping is cheaper only in the first few weeks of a new product. As soon as a product proves it sells, holding a small batch usually makes more money per order.
You also need to think about the cost of mistakes. A dropshipping supplier who sends the wrong item creates a refund, a return, and a negative review. That cost is not always visible in your unit price. Holding stock lets you catch those mistakes before shipping, which saves you from a policy violation and keeps your account healthier.
Is dropshipping worth it on TikTok Shop?
On TikTok Shop, dropshipping is worth it only as a testing strategy. If you have very little cash and you want to see which of several products gets interest, dropshipping lets you try them without buying inventory. But you must follow TikTok Shop's rules exactly. The main risk is that your supplier ships from an unlisted warehouse or provides tracking that does not update properly. That can trigger a violation even if the buyer is happy. I cover this in detail in Can you dropship on TikTok Shop? Rules and risks. For a product that is already selling, dropshipping becomes a bottleneck. You cannot ship as fast as a competitor who holds stock, and you cannot improve packaging or insert a thank-you note. Over time, holding stock wins on both customer experience and profit.
Which one should you pick?
Pick dropshipping if you have very little cash, want to test many products quickly, and have a supplier who ships fast from a warehouse you can list in Seller Center. Pick holding stock if you have a product that already sells, you want faster shipping and better margins, and you can afford a small first batch. My honest take is that most sellers should start with dropshipping for their first few products, then switch to holding stock once a product gets consistent orders. That way you spend money only on what works.
Here is how I rate the two models for a typical TikTok Shop seller, out of 5. These are my judgement calls, not measurements.
