GMV on TikTok Shop is gross merchandise value: the total value of orders placed in your shop before refunds, returns, platform fees, shipping and taxes. Profit and payout are different, smaller numbers. You see GMV in Seller Center under Analytics.

What does GMV mean on TikTok Shop?

GMV is the top-line sales number your shop reports before costs are taken out. Think of it as the money that moves through your checkout before TikTok Shop deducts fees, before a creator commission is paid, before shipping is settled, and before returns or refunds reduce it. In Seller Center it is often shown next to orders, buyers and conversion metrics.

Gross merchandise value is gross by definition. Gross means the big number before costs are removed. Net is what remains after costs. On TikTok Shop the gross number is the value of orders placed, not the amount you will be paid.

GMV vs revenue is a common search because sellers use the two words almost the same way. For most TikTok Shop reports, revenue and GMV mean the top-line sales number before deductions. Some internal reports subtract refunds or discounts before calling it revenue, so always check the metric definition in your own dashboard.

TikTok Shop GMV explained in one practical rule: treat GMV as a volume and demand number. It tells you how much product moved through the shop. It does not tell you how much money stayed in your bank account.

Why does GMV matter?

GMV matters because it shows the total demand your shop is creating before costs hide it. My honest take is that GMV is useful for tracking growth and comparing weeks, but it is not the number to manage a healthy shop. A shop can show strong GMV and still lose money on every order.

Say a shop sells one product at any price. GMV is simply that price multiplied by the number of orders before refunds, fees and shipping. If GMV grows, demand is growing. But if platform fees and returns grow faster, your payout can stay flat. That is why I recommend keeping GMV next to profit per order when you review a shop.

GMV also lets you compare which channel drives sales: live, video, shop page or search. Do not rank channels on GMV alone, because returns and refunds can differ a lot by channel. A live audience may return more items than a search buyer, so a lower GMV channel can sometimes keep more profit.

How do you check or improve GMV?

Check GMV in Seller Center under Analytics, then decide whether to raise orders, average order value, or both. The exact path changes when TikTok moves menus, so if you cannot find it, the current path is under Analytics in Seller Center.

To check: open Seller Center, click Analytics, and open Shop analytics or the data overview. GMV usually sits at the top with orders, buyers and conversion metrics. You can also read how to read your TikTok Shop analytics each week to know which GMV changes are normal.

To improve it:

  • Drive more orders from creator videos, lives, ads or promotions.
  • Raise average order value with bundles or multi-packs.
  • Fix product pages and offers so more visitors buy.
  • Use the free GMV goal planner to turn a monthly sales goal into orders per day, creator videos and samples.

Do not chase GMV by approving every creator or running deep discounts without checking the math. A higher GMV with worse profit per order is not growth, it is a faster way to lose money.

If your GMV is climbing but your payout is not, ask me in the chat on this site. Tell me your situation, your shop, and what you tried, and I will point you to the next thing to check. It is free.

Preguntas frecuentes

GMV is gross merchandise value, the total value of orders placed in your TikTok Shop before refunds, platform fees, shipping and taxes. It is a top-line sales number, not the amount you receive.
What is the difference between GMV and revenue?
For most TikTok Shop sellers GMV and revenue mean the same top-line sales number before deductions. Some sellers reserve revenue for the amount after refunds or discounts, so check how your report labels it.

No. GMV is before costs. Profit is what remains after product costs, platform fees, shipping, ads and other costs. Payout is the money TikTok Shop actually sends to your bank.

TikTok Shop reports GMV in different places, and some views include refunded or canceled orders until they are settled. Check the metric definition in Seller Center for the exact rule in your dashboard.
Where do I see GMV in Seller Center?

Yes, these are real. 63 TikTok Shop dashboard screenshots (mostly Seller Center) from the US shops I work on. Counted from the shops' own order exports, those shops made $1.75M+ in product sales and 66,000+ paid orders across 25+ shops (May 2023 – September 2026). Direct answers

What is orliejohn.com?
orliejohn.com is a free TikTok Shop learning hub for sellers. It has animated Seller Center tutorials, daily TikTok Shop news in plain English, how-to guides, honest X vs Y comparisons, e-commerce basics, strategy, and free calculators and checklists. I am Orlie John Deferia and I write it.
Is it free?
Yes. Every tutorial, guide, news post and tool is free, with no signup. The AI generators have a small free allowance per visitor because each one costs real money to run.
Are there ads or sponsored posts?
No. There are no ads, no sponsored posts and no affiliate links. Nobody pays to be mentioned or ranked here, so a comparison only says what I think is true.
How do you make sure the information is true?
Fees, rates and rules change often, so I do not guess them: I link TikTok Shop's own Seller University page instead. News posts are checked against the TikTok source they link, and every number in them has to appear in that source. Any other number is counted from real order files or marked as an example. Every page shows its date, and when something is wrong I fix it and update the date.
Who writes it?
I do: Orlie John Deferia, a TikTok Shop operator and app developer in Cebu, Philippines. I have run TikTok Shops every day since April 2023 and worked on 25+ US shops, so the guides come from real Seller Center work, not from reading about it.
Is this site from TikTok?
No. It is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or a partner of TikTok. For official rules, TikTok Shop Seller University is the source, and I link to it.
How often is it updated?
News is checked every day against TikTok Shop Seller University. A new guide goes up most days. Tutorials are updated when TikTok moves a menu in Seller Center.
Can I ask my own question?
Yes. Use the chat on any page. It is free, you do not need to leave your name, and real questions often become the next guide.
