How to write TikTok Shop product listings that pass review
Learn how to write TikTok Shop product listings that pass review: titles, images, descriptions and variants, plus a simple pre-submit checklist.
Pass listing review in 7 steps
Step 1 of 7I run TikTok Shop listings through review every week, and most rejections come from a few fixable mistakes. A listing that passes review has a clear title, truthful images, an accurate description, and correct variants. Check the current listing guidelines in TikTok Shop Seller University before you upload.
Why listings get rejected on TikTok Shop
Most rejections I see fall into four groups: titles with unsupported claims, images that mislead, descriptions that are vague or make unproven claims, and variants that do not match the photos. The table below shows what each problem looks like and how to fix it.
| Reason | What it looks like | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Misleading title | "Best", "number one", "cure", or "guaranteed" without proof | Rewrite the title with plain facts: brand, product, key feature, size or count |
| Misleading image | AI image that makes the product look bigger, a photo with added text, or a color that is not real | Use a real photo or only light edits that do not change the product |
| Vague description | No size, material, care, or what is in the box | Add bullet points with the details a buyer asks before ordering |
| Wrong category | Product listed under a similar but incorrect category | Pick the category that matches the product exactly; this changes which rules apply |
| Variant mismatch | Photo shows a set of three but the variant says one unit | Make sure each variant name, price, and image matches what the buyer receives |
My honest take: rejections are almost always caused by one of these five. Fix the cause instead of guessing, and resubmit with the same corrected information.
How do I write a product title that passes review?
A product title that passes review does two jobs: it tells the buyer exactly what the product is, and it avoids claims TikTok Shop flags. I write titles in this order: brand, product type, key feature, size or count. For example, "Glow Lab Vitamin C Face Serum, 1 fl oz" works better than "Best serum on the market" because the first is factual and the second needs proof.
Here is the sequence I follow for every title:
- Write the words a buyer would search for. If the product is a vitamin C serum, start with "Vitamin C Face Serum".
- Add the brand if you have one. Put it first, like "Glow Lab Vitamin C Face Serum".
- Include the main feature that separates it, such as "15% Vitamin C" or "Fragrance-free".
- Add the size or count at the end, like "1 fl oz" or "2 pack".
- Remove any word like "best", "cheap", "miracle", "cure", or "guaranteed" unless you can prove it with a document.
- Check the title with my free listing title checker. It flags length, repeated words, all-caps words, and claims that often need proof.
- Compare the final title against the current character limit shown in Seller Center. If I am not sure, I look at TikTok Shop Seller University.

What product images pass TikTok Shop review?
The safest image is a real photo of the exact product a buyer will receive. I follow these image rules for every listing:
- The main image shows the product on a white or plain background, full product visible.
- No text, logos, or watermarks on the main image. Put those on a later image if needed.
- If the product has multiple colors or variants, each variant gets its own image.
- Show the actual size with a reference object only if the reference is honest and the product appears at true scale.
- For AI-generated images, the product must look exactly like the real thing: same shape, color, label, and included items. Do not use AI to make a 2D product look 3D, to add a false background that implies a different size, or to swap the product for a similar object.
I use my free AI product photo generator only to change the background or lighting, never to alter the product itself. Always compare the generated image against the real product before uploading. The current AI image rules change, so check them on TikTok Shop Seller University each time you use AI.
What should I put in a product description?
A description that passes review answers the buyer's questions before they ask: what is it, what is it made of, how big is it, how do you use it, and what is in the box. I write descriptions in short bullet points, not long paragraphs, because buyers skim on mobile.
Here is the checklist I follow:
- What the product is, in one plain sentence.
- Who it is for, if that matters.
- Key features, such as materials, ingredients, weight, or dimensions.
- What is in the box, including quantity and accessories.
- How to use it, if it is not obvious.
- Care instructions, if relevant.
- Warnings, only if true and required by the product type.
Do not make claims the product cannot support, especially health, medical, or financial claims. If the product is not a medicine, do not say it treats, cures, or prevents any condition. The description is not the place to promise results. For a starting draft, my free AI product title and description writer uses only the facts you type and lists anything risky under "Check before you publish".
How do I set up product variants correctly?
Variants are the options a buyer picks before adding to cart, like size, color, or count. Each variant should have its own SKU, price, stock, and image if the options look different. The most common variant mistake I see is a listing that shows a photo of three units but the variant says one unit, or a color name that does not match the photo.
To set up variants that pass review:
- Decide which options the buyer actually needs. Too many variants make the listing confusing.
- Name each variant with a word a buyer understands, like "Small", "Medium", "Large", not internal codes.
- Give each variant a separate SKU you can track.
- Set a price and stock for every variant, even if some are out of stock.
- Upload a unique image for each variant if the product looks different, like a blue version and a red version.
- Check the current variant limits and naming rules in Seller Center, because they change.
The step-by-step form for adding a product, including variants, is in my tutorial how to add a product on TikTok Shop. After you submit, you can see which listings need work with the tutorial how to improve listing quality on TikTok Shop.
A simple pre-submit checklist
Before you click submit, go through this list. It catches the mistakes that cause most rejections.
| Step | What to check | Good sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Product title | Contains brand, product, feature, size. No claims like "best" or "cure" |
| 2 | Main image | Real product on plain background, no text or logo |
| 3 | Other images | Show size, color, included items truthfully |
| 4 | Description | Bullet points with size, material, and what is in the box |
| 5 | Category | Matches the product exactly |
| 6 | Variants | Each option has its own SKU, price, and image if different |
| 7 | Claims | No health, medical, or financial claims without proof |
| 8 | AI images | Product looks exactly like the real one, no size distortion |
If one item on the list is missing or doubtful, fix it before you submit. A rejected listing costs more time than a few extra minutes of checking.
If you have a listing that keeps getting rejected and you cannot tell why, ask me in the chat on this site. It is free. Tell me your product, what the rejection notice says, and what you already tried, and I will help you figure out the next step.
