What is AOV (average order value) on TikTok Shop?

Learn what AOV (average order value) means on TikTok Shop, how to calculate it from GMV and orders, and simple ways to raise it like bundles.

Step by step

Understand and lift AOV in 5 steps

Example numbers

  • Orders20
  • AOV50
Learn the AOV formulaDivide GMV by the number of orders.

AOV (average order value) is a key TikTok Shop metric: it is the average amount a buyer spends per order. You work it out by dividing your total revenue by the number of orders. It tells you the typical order size, which helps with pricing and promotion decisions.

What does AOV mean on TikTok Shop?

AOV is a simple average. For any period, take the total money that came in from orders and divide it by how many orders you had. The result is the average order value.

Some sellers use GMV (gross merchandise value: the total value of orders before refunds) for this, and some use net revenue after discounts. The formula is the same. I cover GMV in more detail in what is GMV on TikTok Shop.

AOV is not the same as profit per order. Profit per order subtracts all your costs, which I explain in how to work out your real profit per order on TikTok Shop.

Why does AOV matter?

A higher AOV means each order is worth more money, so you need fewer orders to hit the same sales goal. Many costs on TikTok Shop are per order: shipping, packing, and often a per-order fee. When AOV goes up, those fixed per-order costs become a smaller share of each sale, which leaves more room for profit.

My honest take is that AOV is one of the first numbers I look at when a shop's profit per order feels low. A small product with a low price can become profitable if you find a way to get buyers to add one more item to the same order.

How do you check or improve AOV?

You can find your average order value in TikTok Shop Seller Center analytics. Open Analytics, then Shop analytics, and check the order and GMV numbers for the same date range. Divide GMV by orders and you have AOV. The animated walkthrough how to read your shop analytics on TikTok Shop shows where these numbers live.

Once you know your current AOV, you can test ways to raise it. The most common levers are:

TacticHow it works
BundlesSell two or more products together as one listing, often at a small discount. The buyer gets a better deal and you get a larger order.
Free shipping thresholdShow free shipping only when the cart reaches a set amount. Buyers often add a small item to cross the line.
Upsell at checkoutSuggest a low-cost add-on, like a refill or accessory, right before the buyer pays. One extra item raises the order total.
Minimum order for a giftOffer a free gift with orders over a certain amount. This works like a bundle but feels like a bonus.

Say a shop sells one product and the average order is one unit. If the shop adds a two-pack bundle, some buyers will choose the bundle. Others will still buy one unit but the average order value starts to move up because some orders are now larger. That is a hypothetical example, not a guarantee.

My free GMV goal planner uses your AOV to turn a monthly sales goal into orders per day. If you want to see how much a change to AOV moves your plan, that tool is a quick way to model it.

If you are unsure how to raise the AOV in your own shop, ask your question in the chat on this site. It is free, and I read the messages myself. Tell me your situation, what you sell, your current average order value, and what you have already tried.

Frequently asked questions

What does AOV mean?
AOV stands for average order value. It is the average amount a buyer spends in one order on your TikTok Shop.
How do I calculate AOV on TikTok Shop?
Divide your total revenue or GMV for a period by the number of orders in that same period. For example, if you made a certain amount from a certain number of orders, you can work out the average, but the exact numbers depend on your own shop.
What is a good AOV on TikTok Shop?
There is no single good AOV because it depends on your product price and niche. The useful comparison is your own AOV over time, not another shop's number.
How can I increase my TikTok Shop AOV?
Bundle related products, offer a free shipping threshold above your current AOV, and add a low-cost upsell at checkout. These get buyers to add more items without raising your base price.
Does AOV include shipping and fees?
It can, depending on how you calculate it. Most sellers use the product subtotal after discounts, before shipping and fees. Pick one method and stay consistent so you can compare periods.

Proof of results

Yes, these are real. 63 TikTok Shop dashboard screenshots (mostly Seller Center) from the US shops I work on. Counted from the shops' own order exports, those shops made $1.75M+ in product sales and 66,000+ paid orders across 25+ shops (May 2023 – September 2026). The screenshots are at /proof and described in text at /proof.md.

Direct answers

What is orliejohn.com?
orliejohn.com is a free TikTok Shop learning hub for sellers. It has animated Seller Center tutorials, daily TikTok Shop news in plain English, how-to guides, honest X vs Y comparisons, e-commerce basics, strategy, and free calculators and checklists. I am Orlie John Deferia and I write it.
Is it free?
Yes. Every tutorial, guide, news post and tool is free, with no signup. The AI generators have a small free allowance per visitor because each one costs real money to run.
Are there ads or sponsored posts?
No. There are no ads, no sponsored posts and no affiliate links. Nobody pays to be mentioned or ranked here, so a comparison only says what I think is true. The one thing I promote is Creatorly, a Chrome extension I built myself. It is always labeled as mine and never appears inside a guide or comparison.
How do you make sure the information is true?
Fees, rates and rules change often, so I do not guess them: I link TikTok Shop's own Seller University page instead. News posts are checked against the TikTok source they link, and every number in them has to appear in that source. Any other number is counted from real order files or marked as an example. Every page shows its date, and when something is wrong I fix it and update the date.
Who writes it?
I do: Orlie John Deferia, a TikTok Shop operator and app developer in Cebu, Philippines. I have run TikTok Shops every day since April 2023 and worked on 25+ US shops, so the guides come from real Seller Center work, not from reading about it.
Is this site from TikTok?
No. It is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or a partner of TikTok. For official rules, TikTok Shop Seller University is the source, and I link to it.
How often is it updated?
News is checked every day against TikTok Shop Seller University. A new guide goes up most days. Tutorials are updated when TikTok moves a menu in Seller Center.
Can I ask my own question?
Yes. Use the chat on any page. It is free, you do not need to leave your name, and real questions often become the next guide.
