What is ROAS, and what is a good ROAS for a TikTok Shop?
What is ROAS? Learn what return on ad spend means for TikTok Shop, why a good ROAS depends on your profit margin, and how break-even ROAS tells you if ads make money.

What is ROAS? ROAS (return on ad spend) is the money you earn back for every dollar you spend on ads. A good ROAS for TikTok Shop is not a fixed number: it depends on your profit per order. Use break-even ROAS to know where ads stop losing money.
What is a good ROAS for TikTok Shop?
A good ROAS for TikTok Shop is any ROAS above your break-even ROAS. Break-even ROAS is the ROAS where the profit from an order exactly covers the cost of the ads that brought it. At break-even, you do not lose money, but you also keep zero profit before other fixed costs.
There is no universal "good" number, because your break-even depends on your product cost, shipping, platform fees, affiliate commission and any discount. One shop may break even at a low ROAS because it has high profit per order. Another shop may need a much higher ROAS because it has a thin margin. My honest take is that chasing a benchmark from social media is less useful than knowing your own break-even number.
You can work out your break-even ROAS with the free break-even ROAS calculator. It uses your price and costs to show the ROAS where ads stop losing money, the most you can pay per order, and the ROAS you need for a target profit.
What does ROAS mean on TikTok Shop?
ROAS (return on ad spend) is a ratio that compares the sales you attribute to ads with the cost of those ads. To calculate it, divide the revenue from ad-driven orders by the total ad spend that produced them. For example, if you spend one unit of currency on ads and those ads bring three units of revenue, your ROAS is 3.
On TikTok Shop, ROAS appears in the TikTok Shop Ads Manager and in GMV Max reporting. It can show up for a single campaign, a product, or the whole shop. The number by itself does not tell you if you made money. It only tells you how much revenue came back per unit of ad spend. You still need to subtract product cost, shipping, fees and commissions from that revenue.
Why does ROAS matter?
ROAS matters because it tells you whether your ad spend is creating profit or just creating sales that cost more than they earn. A high ROAS can still mean losing money if your profit per order is small. That is why I compare ROAS with break-even ROAS instead of celebrating a number.
To find your real profit per order before ads, use the free TikTok Shop profit calculator or read how to work out your real profit per order. You can also read what is a good profit margin for an online store to understand the margin side.
When your actual ROAS is above break-even, each ad-driven order leaves something. When it is below, every extra order loses money, and more ad spend makes the loss bigger.
How do you check or improve ROAS?
You check ROAS in TikTok Shop Ads Manager or in the ad dashboard for the campaign you are reviewing. Then you compare that number with your break-even ROAS. If you do not know your break-even, start there.
Here are the actions I take when ROAS is below break-even:
| Where the problem is | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Profit per order | Your price, product cost, shipping, fees and commissions | Raise price, reduce costs, lower commission, or cut the discount |
| Ad cost per order | Cost per click and conversion rate | Improve the product page or creative so more clicks turn into orders |
| Offer | Whether the product is worth the price in the video | Run a stronger offer or pick a product with more room for ads |
| Tracking | Whether TikTok counted the orders correctly | Check the attribution window and campaign settings |
You can use the break-even ROAS calculator to set a target ROAS for GMV Max that leaves the profit you want. The goal is not the highest possible ROAS. The goal is a ROAS that stays above break-even while you spend enough to keep learning.
