GMV on TikTok Shop is gross merchandise value: the total value of orders placed in your shop before refunds, returns, platform fees, shipping and taxes. Profit and payout are different, smaller numbers. You see GMV in Seller Center under Analytics.
What does GMV mean on TikTok Shop?
GMV is the top-line sales number your shop reports before costs are taken out. Think of it as the money that moves through your checkout before TikTok Shop deducts fees, before a creator commission is paid, before shipping is settled, and before returns or refunds reduce it. In Seller Center it is often shown next to orders, buyers and conversion metrics.
Gross merchandise value is gross by definition. Gross means the big number before costs are removed. Net is what remains after costs. On TikTok Shop the gross number is the value of orders placed, not the amount you will be paid.
| GMV usually counts | GMV does not show |
|---|---|
| The gross value of orders | Your profit |
| Sales before refunds are subtracted | Your payout |
| Discounted order amounts, because GMV is counted after product discounts | Platform fees, shipping, taxes and ad costs |
GMV vs revenue is a common search because sellers use the two words almost the same way. For most TikTok Shop reports, revenue and GMV mean the top-line sales number before deductions. Some internal reports subtract refunds or discounts before calling it revenue, so always check the metric definition in your own dashboard.
TikTok Shop GMV explained in one practical rule: treat GMV as a volume and demand number. It tells you how much product moved through the shop. It does not tell you how much money stayed in your bank account.
Why does GMV matter?
GMV matters because it shows the total demand your shop is creating before costs hide it. My honest take is that GMV is useful for tracking growth and comparing weeks, but it is not the number to manage a healthy shop. A shop can show strong GMV and still lose money on every order.
Say a shop sells one product at any price. GMV is simply that price multiplied by the number of orders before refunds, fees and shipping. If GMV grows, demand is growing. But if platform fees and returns grow faster, your payout can stay flat. That is why I recommend keeping GMV next to profit per order when you review a shop.
GMV also lets you compare which channel drives sales: live, video, shop page or search. Do not rank channels on GMV alone, because returns and refunds can differ a lot by channel. A live audience may return more items than a search buyer, so a lower GMV channel can sometimes keep more profit.
How do you check or improve GMV?
Check GMV in Seller Center under Analytics, then decide whether to raise orders, average order value, or both. The exact path changes when TikTok moves menus, so if you cannot find it, the current path is under Analytics in Seller Center.
To check: open Seller Center, click Analytics, and open Shop analytics or the data overview. GMV usually sits at the top with orders, buyers and conversion metrics. You can also read how to read your TikTok Shop analytics each week to know which GMV changes are normal.
To improve it:
- Drive more orders from creator videos, lives, ads or promotions.
- Raise average order value with bundles or multi-packs.
- Fix product pages and offers so more visitors buy.
- Use the free GMV goal planner to turn a monthly sales goal into orders per day, creator videos and samples.
Do not chase GMV by approving every creator or running deep discounts without checking the math. A higher GMV with worse profit per order is not growth, it is a faster way to lose money.
