How to Sell on TikTok Shop: Step-by-Step for Beginners

Learn how to sell on TikTok Shop step by step: set up your seller account, list products, and get first orders. A plain walkthrough from someone who runs TikTok Shops daily.

Step by step

Start selling on TikTok Shop in 6 steps

Step 1 of 6
  • Government ID
  • US bank account for payouts
  • A product TikTok Shop allows
  • A way to ship on time
Get the basics ready

I run TikTok Shops every day since April 2023. To sell on TikTok Shop, you open a seller account, add products that follow the listing rules, set up shipping and payment, then get orders through the Shop tab, creator videos, or your own content. This guide walks through each step for a complete beginner.

What do you need to sell on TikTok Shop?

You need a few basic things before you start. A US bank account for payouts, a government-issued ID for verification, and a product that TikTok Shop allows. You also need to be able to ship orders on time, which usually means having the product in stock and a way to print shipping labels.

TikTok Shop changes its exact document and category requirements often. I do not list them here because they go out of date. Instead, check TikTok Shop Seller University for the current rules for your region. The direct link is https://seller-us.tiktok.com/university/home.

How to set up your TikTok Shop seller account (step by step)

  1. Go to TikTok Shop Seller Center and click Sign up. Use the same email you check every day.
  2. Choose your business type: individual or company. Most beginners start as an individual seller.
  3. Fill in your personal and business details. TikTok asks for your legal name, address, and phone number.
  4. Verify your identity. You upload a photo of your ID and sometimes a selfie.
  5. Add your bank account details for payouts. TikTok sends your sales money there.
  6. Set your shop name. Pick something clear and related to what you sell.
  7. Finish the onboarding. TikTok may ask for tax information depending on your country.

After you submit, TikTok reviews your application. It can take a few days. You will see a notification in Seller Center when you are approved.

How to list your first product (step by step)

Listing a product is the core skill on TikTok Shop. I have a full animated walkthrough at how to add a product on TikTok Shop. Here is the short version:

  1. In Seller Center, click Products, then Manage products, then Add product.
  2. Upload clear product photos. The first photo is the main image buyers see. Use a plain background and show the product from the front.
  3. Write a product title that buyers would type into search. Put the main keyword first, then brand, then key feature, then size or count. See my guide on how to write a TikTok Shop product title buyers search for.
  4. Choose the right category. This decides which rules apply to your listing.
  5. Write a description that explains what it is, who it is for, and what is in the box. Do not make health or performance claims unless you can prove them.
  6. Set a price. Work out your profit per order first using my free TikTok Shop profit calculator so you know the price covers your costs.
  7. Enter your stock quantity. Only list what you can ship within the dispatch window.
  8. Enter the package weight and size. This affects shipping cost and carrier options.
  9. Submit for review. TikTok checks your listing and either approves it or tells you what to fix.

If your product fails review, read the reason carefully. Fix it and resubmit. Most failures come from wrong category, unsupported claims, or missing details.

How to set up shipping and payment

Shipping: go to Logistics in Seller Center and set up your warehouse and shipping template. I have a step-by-step at how to set up shipping on TikTok Shop. You can either use TikTok Shipping, where TikTok buys the label for you, or seller shipping, where you buy your own labels and upload tracking.

Payment: your bank account should already be linked from account setup. Check that payouts are scheduled and that your tax details are correct. You can see your balance under Finances in Seller Center.

How to get your first order: the main sales channels

TikTok Shop has three main ways buyers find your products. Here is a table of each channel and what you need to do.

ChannelHow it worksWhat you need to do
Shop tabBuyers search and browse products on TikTok Shop's shopping pageOptimize your product title and description with keywords buyers search. Price competitively.
Creator videosCreators post videos tagging your products, and buyers tap the product linkInvite creators in your niche. Offer a free sample and a fair commission. Track which creators sell.
Your own videos and liveYou post videos or go live showing your product, and viewers buy directlyMake simple videos showing the product in use. Go live when you have stock ready.

For most beginners, creator videos are the fastest path because creators already have an audience. I have a tutorial on how to invite creators on TikTok Shop. Start by inviting 10 to 20 creators who make content in your product category.

What are the fees and costs?

TikTok Shop charges a platform fee on each sale. There may also be payment processing fees and shipping costs. The exact percentages change, so I do not quote them here. I wrote a full guide on TikTok Shop fees explained that links to the official page. Always read the current fee schedule in Seller Center before you price your products.

Use my free TikTok Shop profit calculator to work out your profit per order after fees, shipping, and any affiliate commission. That number tells you if your price is sustainable.

Can you start with no audience?

Yes. You do not need followers to sell on TikTok Shop. The Shop tab search can bring buyers if your listing is good, and creator videos can bring your first order even if your own account is new.

My honest take on getting started

My honest take is that the biggest beginner mistake is overthinking the setup and underthinking the product offer. Spend one afternoon opening the shop, then spend a week improving your product page and inviting creators. A good product at a clear price beats a fancy shop setup.

Do not spend on ads before you have at least a few organic sales. Some sales data helps you know which products are worth promoting.

Checklist before you go live

  • Seller account approved
  • Bank account connected
  • Shipping template set up
  • First product approved and in stock
  • Product title contains the main keyword
  • Product photos are clear and accurate
  • Price covers your costs with room for fees
  • You have invited at least 10 creators
  • You have a plan to answer buyer messages within a day

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to start selling on TikTok Shop?
You need a valid ID, a bank account for payouts, and a product that meets TikTok Shop's rules. You also need to be able to ship orders on time. Check TikTok Shop Seller University for the current document requirements.
Is it free to open a TikTok Shop?
Opening a TikTok Shop does not have a signup fee, but you pay a platform fee on each sale. That fee changes over time, so check Seller University for the current rate. I keep a link to the official fee page in my fees guide.
How long does it take to get approved?
Seller account approval usually takes a few business days, but it can be faster or slower depending on your documents. Product listing review is separate and usually takes a day or two. If your product fails review, fix the reason and resubmit.
Do I need to create videos to sell on TikTok Shop?
You can sell without making your own videos via the Shop tab and creator collaborations. But your own videos and live streams often bring the fastest first orders. Start with whatever you can do consistently.
Can I sell from outside the US?
TikTok Shop has different rules by country. The steps in this guide are for US sellers, but the process is similar in other supported regions. Check Seller University for your region's requirements.
How do I get my first sale?
List a product that solves a clear problem, set a fair price, and invite creators in your niche to promote it. Also check that your product page has clear photos, a keyword-rich title, and a strong description. Then be patient and track what works.

Proof of results

Yes, these are real. 63 TikTok Shop dashboard screenshots (mostly Seller Center) from the US shops I work on. Counted from the shops' own order exports, those shops made $1.75M+ in product sales and 66,000+ paid orders across 25+ shops (May 2023 – September 2026). Direct answers

What is orliejohn.com?
orliejohn.com is a free TikTok Shop learning hub for sellers. It has animated Seller Center tutorials, daily TikTok Shop news in plain English, how-to guides, honest X vs Y comparisons, e-commerce basics, strategy, and free calculators and checklists. I am Orlie John Deferia and I write it.
Is it free?
Yes. Every tutorial, guide, news post and tool is free, with no signup. The AI generators have a small free allowance per visitor because each one costs real money to run.
Are there ads or sponsored posts?
No. There are no ads, no sponsored posts and no affiliate links. Nobody pays to be mentioned or ranked here, so a comparison only says what I think is true. The one thing I promote is Creatorly, a Chrome extension I built myself. It is always labeled as mine and never appears inside a guide or comparison.
How do you make sure the information is true?
Fees, rates and rules change often, so I do not guess them: I link TikTok Shop's own Seller University page instead. News posts are checked against the TikTok source they link, and every number in them has to appear in that source. Any other number is counted from real order files or marked as an example. Every page shows its date, and when something is wrong I fix it and update the date.
Who writes it?
I do: Orlie John Deferia, a TikTok Shop operator and app developer in Cebu, Philippines. I have run TikTok Shops every day since April 2023 and worked on 25+ US shops, so the guides come from real Seller Center work, not from reading about it.
Is this site from TikTok?
No. It is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or a partner of TikTok. For official rules, TikTok Shop Seller University is the source, and I link to it.
How often is it updated?
News is checked every day against TikTok Shop Seller University. A new guide goes up most days. Tutorials are updated when TikTok moves a menu in Seller Center.
Can I ask my own question?
Yes. Use the chat on any page. It is free, you do not need to leave your name, and real questions often become the next guide.
